Virtual Lesson Policy

Purpose

The Nittany Valley Figure Skating Club (NVFSC) is permitting skaters to receive virtual lessons during Club ice sessions. We reserve the right to discontinue this option if we find that video lessons create an unsafe skating environment. 

Conditions

  • For skaters younger than 18: According to SkateSafe®, lessons must be conducted without headphones/earbuds in so that the interaction is “observable and interruptible” by another adult. If a session is not “observable or interruptible”, SkateSafe® requires a parent/guardian/additional coach/monitor participate on the call. The parent is responsible for ensuring the lesson is “observable or interruptible”. The coach should initiate the call, and it is recommended that coaches archive electronic communications for three years.
  • All coaches must be approved prior to coaching. If a skater is interested in taking a lesson from a coach who does not currently have NVFSC approval, please have the coach email coachcompliance@nittanyvalleyfsc.org for directions on how to become an approved coach.
  • Skaters/families are responsible for:
    • reviewing the SkateSafe® guidelines for remote coaching (Sec. II, Part 3: Electronic Communications Policy)
    • scheduling and compensating coaches
    • supplying and operating the requisite technology (the Club is not able to provide technical assistance)
    • letting the monitor know who the lesson is with before entering the ice
    • placing colored posterboard behind their phone during lessons
  • Skaters must remain aware of other skaters on the ice, and may be asked to relocate by monitors or on-ice coaches if needed. Please bring any concerns to the attention of the monitors should an issue arise.
  • Skaters and coaches may need to adjust lesson plans based on the number of other skaters on the ice. Patterns that require the use of the entire ice surface may be difficult to manage remotely.
